Beyond Birthday, my favorite tragic monster...

From our Death Note Novel, 2B or Not 2B:

“Do you know what it’s like, Lawli?” B said at last. “To kill the one you love?”

L’s eyes fluttered dimly. “Of course I do,” and his voice was low, level. “More than you’ll ever know.”

“That’s because I’ve only ever loved one,” B answered.

L held up the match.

B watched him, watched him steadily, but L could see him breathing shallow, could sense it peeling off him in waves—the holy fucking tragedy of it all. And this morning L was willing to go with him, and tonight he’d only do it to end things. To end Beyond—to save Mello… to put the matter to rest at last.

(“L, this is B,” Watari said. “You’re going to be the best of friends.”)

Fucking Liar. Fucking rot and recrudescence. That was Wammy’s at its core. The acute recurrence of the disease over and over again. Designed to hate. Designed to hurt. Designed to be monsters.

“Is today the day?” Beyond said.

L’s heart thudded dully, climbing into his throat. His fingers trembled.

The room reeked of petrol.

“Let’s find out,” he replied—and lit the match.
